Bharatnatyam
One of the oldest classical dance forms originating in Tamil Nadu. Thought to be between 3rd century BC and 3rd century AD. It is always accompanied by classical music. It is thought to be the embodiment of music in visual form, a ceremony, an act of devotion. It originated in temples and of south India and is depict on the walls. It is currently one of the widest forms of classical Indian dance performed by many dancers around the world.

Bollywood dance
These is not a house hold in the world who do not know about the glamorous world of Bollywood. The likes of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Bombay Dreams’ has meant that everyone can appreciate this fusion dance form which has its origins deep in Indian history, but now is as diverse and encompassing as the world itself.

Carnatic Violin
As we know it, but played sitting cross legged on the floor and resting the instrument near the feet instead of the neck. It was introduced into the subcontinent around 1790 mainly by the Irish working for the East India Company. However, the music style has been adapted to suit both Northern and Carnatic (Southern) Indian styles.

Dhol
The Dhol is a widely used instrument in the North of India mainly Punjab, Gujarat and Assam. It was possibly introduced to the subcontinent in around the 15th century. It is a double sided drum worn aroun the neck and struck with specially designed sticks. It is now synonymous with Bhangra music and is widely used in many genre of western music styles.

Harmonium/Keyboard
The harmonium is also known as peti or baja. This instrument is not a native Indian instrument. It is a European instrument which was imported in the 19th century. It is a reed organ with hand pumped bellows.

Kathak
From the word ‘Katha’ story this form of dance is more popular in the north of India. Recounting mythical, religious story these bards travelled across villages entertaining and education the masses. This dance form absorbed Persian influences and was later adopted by the Moghul Emperors and became the dance of the courts. Now, usually accompanied by Tabla and Sitar it has travel both time and cultures and there have been many fusions of Kathak with Flamenco and Samba. Relying on intricate foot work and breathtaking spins the dance form is both spectacular and mesmerising to watch.

Santoor
First Introduced in Iran the Santoor has put down its roots in Kashmir, but has later spread throughout the subcontinent. The original form of the instruments had over 100 strings and has been referenced in the ancient Vedic literature. The modern Santoor (Persian), usually made of Walnut holds around 70 strings, made of steel, which are struck with 2 specially shaped wooden mallets. The sound emitted is not too dissimilar to the harp or harpsichord.

Sitar
The beautiful instrument is made up of a gourd resonating body, a long neck on which 21 to 23 strings resonate. It seems to have been around after the collapse of the Moghal Empire and is an instrument commonly played in North India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Most famously played by Pandit Ravi Shanker, who then taught it to the Beetles in the sixties.

Tabla
A pair of hand drums which strike different tones depending on the position of the hand and fingers and pressure. These instatements have been widely adapted to western music styles and are commonly heard in genre such as Rock to fusion. The most famous of table players is Talvin Singh who has worked and produced music with people like Madonna, Bjork, Massive Attack and more recently, Jay Z.
