Rakesh is a Music Composer-Teacher-Singer & teaches Hindustani style music teacher of Harmonium, Keyboard and vocal. Rakesh has trained in India under Gurushri Dinesh Majmundar, Shri Brij Joshi and Shri Shashank Fadnis, Vocal training and inspiration from Gurushri Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty. Rakesh is also theArtistic Director of 'Raga Jyoti' The Indian Classical Music Ensemble. Raga Jyoti musicians present specially composed traditional Indian music in collaboration with talented Western and Indian musicians and music styles. Rakesh is interested in creative music work and promoting Indian classical music, dance arts and education worldwide. He Specialises in performing Bhakti and Sugam Sangeet Singing. In the past, Rakesh has accompanied Harmonium, Keyboard and vocal with many world class International musicians. Favourite music includes Classical themed music based on nature, devotional songs, classy Bollywood songs, soft western symphony and favourite musicians include Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, Shri Ashit Desai, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Dr, Jayanthi Kumaresh, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Shri Hariharan and Shri Jagjit Singh.

Abha Puri, our Hindi teacher at Bhavan, joined us over two years ago. Abha does everything in her power to ensure that learning Hindi is an enjoyable experience for her students.  She has been a successful language teacher for many years. 

 

Abha has gained her M.A. in English, Economics and B.Ed qualifications from India. She has had eight years’ Hindi teaching experience in India. 

 

Abha has also worked as a Primary School teacher in a Public School and currently teaches English (to the speakers of other languages) as an (ESOL) Tutor to adults in the UK.  During her teaching career she has been working with people from different nationalities and taught IELTS (International English Language Testing System) for a brief period of time.

 

Abha brings to her work as Hindi teacher, extensive skills and expertise gained during her past 11 years of teaching as ESOL tutor in UK.

Samir has been an active member of Bhavan teaching staff. He teaches Tabla, Harmonium, Keyboard and vocal.
Samir's late father, the Maestro PanditManikraoPopatkar, originally introduced Tabla to Bhavan students as well as tomany schools in U.K. Samir considers himself fortunate to have studied Tabla skills from his father. Over the years, Samir has developed techniques in teaching the Dholak.

In the past years Samir has performed at many venues bothwithin the shores of United Kingdom as well as overseas. He has accompanied prominent artist from India and has also played at weddings, birthday parties, and private functions. He has delighted audiences during festivals of Diwali and Navaratri by playing with orchestras/bands performing popular Raas, garba music with local groups.

Samir's profession is in banking. He obtained his GCSE 'O' and 'A' levels and a Business Diploma in UK. Since 1988 he has been working with Bank of India in Manchester.
Samir enjoys the respect of his students, colleagues and members of the community as he himself claims to be proud and honoured to be so well known within our society through his music and his banking relations.

Interested in sport from childhood, Jacqui started attending yoga classes in 1971 and qualified as a teacher in 1984. She soon started her own Tuesday evening classes at Brown Lane Methodist Church which continue to this day. Jacqui emerged with further qualifications in Yoga by undertaking a three year teaching course run by the British Wheel of Yoga. In 1998 Jacqui was appointed Yoga Teacher at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Manchester). Very soon the remarkable increase in the number of yoga students meant that her class had to be split into 3, for ladies, gentlemen and for children. Jacqui has always maintained an element of fun in her teaching while taking the discipline of yoga itself very seriously. She believes that she is a life- long learner of yoga and regularly attends Yoga seminars to improve her own skills further. Jacqui has been with Bhavan ever since it's conception. Her friendly, caring, delightful nature has attracted many people who have become close friends over the years. Her positive influence in the yoga class has turned into great admiration and respect for Jacqui by students over the years. Jacqui, for her part, takes enormous enjoyment from watching her students make progress.

Rajeswary started learning Karnatic Vocal and Violin at a young age of 12years. Her formal training began under close individual guidance of Shree Sarvaswara Sarmha. Rajeswary was an able pupil who achieved excellent marks for every grade during her training. She is privileged to have a great musician for a mother who has also been a source of inspiration and learning. Rajeswary’s mother/ teacher has excelled in Vocal music while continuing to play the Harmonium even at the ripe old age of eighty five years. Rajeswary undertook a special teaching course which she successfully completed in 2009. She is a keen musician and a dedicated teacher who feels that she is blessed to have the opportunity to create an atmosphere of music in which children enjoy and give of their best. Rajeswary has gained considerable experience in teaching violin and the violin to young children. She has been in demand, mainly by South Asian audiences, as a performer of music both in and out of the United Kingdom. This has been in fairly large venues like community halls and Temples.

Sharmista Bhattacharjee

Bollywood dance

Ladies Dance

Sharmista Bhattacharjee joined Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Manchester) last year as a Bollywood dance teacher. As well as being an enthusiastic dance teacher, Sharmista is a young and vivacious dancer herself.

Her very first stage performance was at the age of 3 years in Mumbai, where she was born. 

Some of her achievements in dance include:-

  • Playing a role in a Hindi feature film, ‘Chakchak’
  • Finalists in ‘Boogie – Woogie – Indian dance show on Sony TV
  • Winning the Youth Dance Competition in the Diwali Dassehra Mela, Manchester
  • Responsibility for Judging dance performances

Sharmista continues to perform at social events in many different UK communities. 

Her friendly nature has attracted many students. Sharmista believes that her students should come to learn dance of their own free will, and because they love to dance. She makes sure that everyone is having fun as they learn Bollywood dance from her.
